Michael Wignall to curate at Devon-based contemporary craft exhibition

Former Gidleigh Park executive chef, Michael Wignall, has announced that he will be curating an exhibition in collaboration with the Devon Guild of Craftsmen to showcase contemporary ceramics and other art forms.

Wignall, who held two Michelin stars and five AA rosettes at the Chagford property before leaving at the beginning of the year to set up his own venture, will be co-curating the exhibition in Devon with the guild's exhibition manager Saffron Wynne. The Devon Guild of Craftsmen is a charity that helps to educate people about contemporary craft, while also creating opportunities for the craftspeople it supports.

Entitled "Plate Up", the exhibition will take place at the guild's craft centre in Bovey Tracey from 14 September to 4 November, and Wignall will showcase the work of selected UK practitioners who produce artisan products associated with the making and serving of food.

Speaking to The Caterer, Wignall said: "I have my own distinct working practices when it comes to creating and serving my food, and I like to use contemporary craft when doing so. ‘Plate Up' will highlight the personalities behind the chefs that they support, and show where aesthetic and cultural influences lie, while offering visitors the chance to see and buy inspiring work."

Among the craftspeople to be featured will be Sarah Jerath, who Wignall has worked with for some time, and who also makes plates for Mark Birchall at his recently launched restaurant with rooms Moor Hall in Aughton, Lancashire.

Other artists and exhibition pieces are currently being selected by Wignall and Wynne, who are theming the show around fire, earth, metal, water and wood. Exhibits include a collection of caviar tins and herbs from plant-growing system Evogro in addition to a wide selection of ceramics.

Wignall left Gidleigh Park at the start of the year after completing two years at the property. He was awarded two Michelin stars there after just nine months, and five AA rosettes after a year.

Regarding his next professional role, Wignall said he was currently working on "an exciting project" in the north of England.
