Brakes Catering Equipment supports children's cooking school

One of the UK's biggest food service providers, the Brakes Group, is supporting an initiative to provide underprivileged children with education on cooking and healthy eating.

Brakes Catering Equipment has been working with charity The Kids' Cookery School in Acton, West London, helping to design and build mobile kitchen units at a discounted rate as well as supplying the majority of the catering equipment for the vans which will be driven around to schools and youth centres.

The Kids' Cookery school initiative - which is currently short-listed for a National Lottery award - was set up in 1995 to help children aged 3 and over learn to cook and understand about eating healthy food. The mobile catering units are part of the charity's expansion which aims to provide children across London with hands-on cooking experience and access to fresh ingredients.

Eleanor Sayers-Smith, also from Brakes Catering Equipment said: "We know that many children are not lucky enough to learn about healthy eating and certainly don't have the opportunity to cook from a young age. That is why schemes like The Kids' Cookery School are so important and we are truly honoured to be part of such an idea; it is our hope that schemes like this will eventually be available throughout the country".

"The help and support we have received from Brakes Catering Equipment has made a huge difference to our project and the pilot. The team has gone out of its way to help us design something very new and innovative," said Fiona Hamilton-Farley, chief executive officer of The Kids' Cookery School.

"Being mobile will mean we can reach many more children, especially those in need. We will teach them a life skill that is lacking in today's world and give them the opportunity to stay fit, healthy and enjoy life to its full."

The Kids' Cookery School is hoping that the London Mayor Boris Johnson will officially launch the mobile unit at the end of September 2009.
