UNWTO holds review over predicted swine flu onslaught
The United Nations World Travel Organisation (UNWTO) has held a two-day review for the travel and tourism industry in Madrid in order to prepare for an expected onslaught of swine flu over the next few months.
The workshop was held between 26-27 of August and brought together 33 public administrations, the private sector-including hospitality services- to increase preparation for the second wave of the pandemic, expected to begin in autumn.
The participants stressed the need for communication among the different stakeholders of the sector, and in particular to keep in regular contact with the Tourism Emergency Response Network.
The event stressed that travellers should be vigilant about their own health, stay informed and follow fundamental hygiene measures, such as frequent hand washing and "proper cough etiquette".
Geoffrey Lipman, UNTWO assistant secretary general, said: "This review was timely and exceptionally helpful to strengthen our sector's preparedness to ensure that tourism and travel constinues to be effectively embedded in the global pandemic response."
