Fish & Chip Awards 2016: Lussmanns and Morrisons in foodservice final

Lussmanns Fish & Grill restaurants and Morrisons Supermarket cafés have each been shortlisted as finalists for the Best Foodservice Operator Award in the 2016 National Fish & Chip Awards, by Seafish.

Lussmanns has sites in St Albans, Hertford and Harpenden, while Morrisons is spread across the UK. The shortlisted duo will now take part in a fry-off head-to-head final for the chance to win the title of best fish and chips in the foodservice industry.

Both businesses will also be subjected to unannounced judging visits with the customer service and on-the-night quality of the fish reviewed.

The final awards ceremony will take place at the London Lancaster hotel on 20 January next year.

The judging criteria for the category throughout the contest has focused on responsible sourcing policies, the development of seafood supplier relationships, preparation and cooking techniques, innovation and customer service.

Sponsored by the Responsible Fishing Scheme, the award is open to all foodservice outlets, including independent businesses, which serve fish and chips as part of their wider food offering. It forms part of the wider National Fish & Chip Awards, which recognise the traditional British dish in a variety of ways, including traditional ‘chippy' takeaways and mobile operators.

Mel Groundsell, corporate relations director at Seafish, congratulated the finalists on their commitment, and commented: "With more and more pubs, canteens, restaurants and cafés serving fish and chips, it's important for us to recognise their contribution to the industry. This award aims to celebrate businesses that don't solely focus on producing fish and chips, but nevertheless go the extra mile to create the highest quality fish and chips."

Award sponsor Mick Bacon, manager of the Responsible Fishing Scheme, commented: "This award is a great means of getting more general foodservice businesses involved in our industry. When you witness the standard of some of their fish and chips it's clear why we have the award category."
