Gurval Durand appointed general manager at Whatley Manor
Gurval Durand is to leave Le Manoir aux Quat'Saisons to become general manager at Whatley Manor, near Malmesbury, Wiltshire.
He will take over from Peter Egli, who is to move back to Switzerland to manage, with his wife Esther, the iconic five star Suvretta House hotel in St. Moritz.
Durand has been deputy general manager at Le Manoir since 2005. He started at the hotel in 1997 as senior manager before later becoming restaurant manager. Original from France, he trained in several Relais & Châteaux hotels, including L'Hostellerie de Levernois in Beaune.
Egli has managed Whatley Manor since 2004, following the completion of a three and a half year refurbishment of the house and gardens. The hotel went on to became a member of Relais & Châteaux the following year and has achieved five red stars and four rosettes from the AA.
Christian Landolt, owner of Whatley Manor, said: "During the last 10 years, Whatley Manor has been fortunate enough to have Peter Egli as its general manager. It has however not been entirely plain sailing, particularly in those difficult early years, so I will be forever indebted to his professionalism, support and quiet determination. Subsequently it is thanks to him we have achieved so many awards and accolades.
"Now a new chapter begins. It is with pleasure that I welcome Gurval Durand to the helm. His experience and enthusiasm will help fill the void left by Peter's departure and ensure that Whatley Manor's success story continues."
Set within 12 acres of gardens, Whatley Manor boasts a two-Michelin-star restaurant overseen by Martin Burge, as well as the informal brasserie Le Mazot, the Aquarias Spa , and a 40-seat cinema.
Durand will take over as general manager on 1 Febraury 2014 following a short handover period in the New Year.
