Tony Fleming to depart South Place for new boutique hotel

Tony Fleming is leaving South Place, the D&D London hotel in the City of London that he joined prior to its opening nearly four years ago as executive chef.

He has been appointed to the same role at the 40-bedroom L'Oscar hotel, a new luxury boutique set to open in Holborn, in September.

Owned by Triangle Hotels and Resorts, a division of investment and asset management group Triangle, L'Oscar is being developed at a cost of £40m within an Edwardian Baroque building, which was originally the headquarters of the Baptist Union.

Fleming said he was attracted to the individuality of a unique building that will feature "opulent and lavish" designs created by Parisian interior designer Jacques Garcia.

"The design is looking amazing," he said. "L'Oscar is definitely going to become a destination in its own right, as opposed to just another hotel."

Fleming said he was looking forward to being involved in creating two restaurant concepts at the hotel, which will include a grill room for around 40 to 50 covers in the original domed Baptist chapel and a more informal, all-day café with a terrace on Southampton Row. He will also be responsible for two private dining rooms, for up to 40 covers each, a bar and room service.

Fleming won a Michelin star for South Place a year after the hotel opened in 2012. He said that he had "loved" his time at the 80-bedroom hotel, which he is set to leave on 24 March.

"Opening what was D&D's first hotel was a massive challenge," he explained. "As a restaurant-led company, D&D has taught me so much, which will stand me in good stead for the future."

Fleming, who earlier in his career worked at One Aldwych and the Great Eastern hotel, will join L'Oscar in April. General manager of the hotel is Michael Voigt, who was previously in the same role at the Arch London.
