FoodCycle eco café reaches fundraising target

A London community eco café has been thrown a lifeline to continue operating for another year after a successful fundraising effort.

A campaign by the FoodCycle Café in Haringey, powered by crowdfunding website Peoplefund.it and supported by celebrities, MPs and Twitter, reached its £5,000 target this week.

The funds will ensure that the café, which uses food headed for landfill to create a ‘pay what you can' healthy eating lunch offer every Friday, can stay open for another 12 months.

The cash was raised as part of a week-long Twitter campaign that saw more than 270 people donate a total of £5,047.

Local MP Lynne Featherstone and Thom from Channel 4's Three Hungry Boys visited the café to show their support.

Daniel Turi, the FoodCycle Café Co-ordinator, said: "It's amazing how people came together through Twitter over just five days and raised enough money to keep the café going for another year.

"It shows the importance of the café in the community and we're now really looking forward to doing more and more in the future."
