The UK Pastry Team has scored a triple triumph in carrying off the coveted gold medal European Pastry Cup in Paris, last night.
Alongside wining the top prize in front of a panel of judges, press and public audience at the International Food Fair Europain, they also received awards for the best sugar and best chocolate displays.
The success of the team - made up of Javier Mercado, pastry lecturer, Westminster Kingsway College and Nicolas Bouhelier, pastry sous chef, Le Manoir aux Quat'Saisons, Oxfordshire, with Martin Chiffers, executive pastry chef of the Savoy, London, as captain - means they will now go forward to compete in the Coupe du Monde de la Pâtisserie in Lyon, in January 2013.
"It was a total success for the British pastry industry," said the team's promotion manager, Richard Victoria of Ritter Courivaud.
Mercado and Bouhelier prepared a buffet which involving two fruit desserts, nine identical desserts on a plate and two centrepieces - one of sugar and one of chocolate.
The UK was placed ninth in the Coupe de Monde in 2011, after being represented for the first time since 2003.
